Review of the TYPO3camp Berlin 2018
From June 1st - 3rd we were at the TYPO3camp in Berlin, which took place for the 9th time. As in previous years, we supported the camp as a platinum sponsor.
As in the previous year, the camp took place at Forum Treptow, a modern and spacious venue.
The camp began on Friday evening with the warm-up party, where the participants were able to get to know each other or catch up with old acquaintances. The highlight of the evening for many was certainly the darts tournament.
On Saturday, the camp started with a keynote speech by Fiona Krakenbürger on the topic of "Diversity in Open Source", which addressed the question of why there are actually relatively few women in IT professions.
After the subsequent short round of introductions, the session planning began, with the first question being about desired topics, which was well received.
What was striking about the camp was the relatively low proportion of TYPO3 newcomers, so that there were quite a few technically demanding sessions.
Here is a brief overview of the sessions in which we were able to participate or which were held by us.
Backend for Beginners
Daniel Siepmann gave a brief insight into the structure of the TYPO3 core. Where to find which functions, how to find out how the core works. An interesting insight for future TYPO3 developers.
TYPO3 Version 9
So much in advance: TYPO3 9 will be really g... good! :)
Frank Nägler and Andreas Wolf showed us the current state of development of TYPO3 9 and also gave us a small preview of upcoming functions.
Google Tag Manager
In his session, Sven Deutschländer showed us that the Google Tag Manager can do much more than just manage various JavaScript snippets for a website. An extremely useful tool that not only simplifies the installation of various code snippets (e.g. Google Analytics, Matomo etc.), but also brings them into a clear, comprehensible and documentable form.
TYPO3 Documentation
Martin Bless, the head of the "TYPO3 Documentation Team", showed that it is actually quite easy to contribute to the official TYPO3 documentation yourself. He also showed a way to create the documentation for your own extensions in the same form as the official documentation using a ready-made Docker image.
Since the team currently consists of only 3 people, any help is welcome!
Education Committee Insights
Marc Willmann and Andreas Wolf explained what the Education Committee is responsible for. The team is not only responsible for the various certifications, but also for the newly created trainer network. The Education Committee would also welcome additional members and help.
User Group Management
Bodo Eichstaedt moderated a small discussion round on the topic of "User Group Management". What problems can you encounter as the organizer of a user group, how can these be solved, how do you get new members and get them to attend more than just one meeting? It was an interesting exchange of experiences.
Crash course on integration
In a two-hour crash course, Wolfgang Wagner showed a possible way to get from an empty, freshly installed TYPO3 to a functioning website relatively easily. The focus was on the creation of a sitepackage and the handling of fluid templates.
Link Validator
The link validator is a TYPO3 system extension that many people don't even know about. It can be used to check the validity of internal and external links as well as links to files.
Sybille Peters showed the current functions of the link validator and also collected suggestions for improvement for future versions of the extension.
Social event
Of course, the networking and socializing (or in other words: the party) on Saturday evening was not to be missed. Specially hired coaches took all participants to "Birgit & Bier", a "somewhat different" beer garden. You can probably only find something like this in Berlin ;)
Conclusion
It was great fun to take part in this camp. We were able to learn a lot and had a good exchange with the TYPO3 community.
We can only recommend all TYPO3 users to take part in a camp themselves. Whether editor, integrator or developer, everyone can gain an incredible amount from participating in such events.
Once again, we would like to thank all participants and the organizing team of the camp! See you next year!
